Gold Colloid

The optical properties of gold at the nanoscale are exciting, because gold nanoparticles have a colour varying from red to purple to orange depending on particle size, a property that can be successfully exploited in a range of applications. Additionally, gold nanoparticles are now known to be catalytically active for a range of commercially important reactions and they also have a surface chemistry particularly suited to the attachment of sulphur-containing molecules, such as thiols, which permits the ‘bottom-up’ assembly of interesting and useful structures. Based on these unique properties, exciting new nanotechnology applications using gold are being developed. These range from innovative electronic materials and devices, to cancer treatments and biomedical techniques for monitoring body fluids, through to new catalysts for pollution control, chemical processing and fuel cells.

Silver Colloid

Silver Colloid has the potential for strong passive binding and an ability, due to their relatively small size, to pack densely at the capture line, therefore producing a strong visible signal. Due to the differing light scattering properties of silver particles, the absorption of light results in a yellow line, as opposed to the red line displayed by gold. As a result, the potential for silver as an additional capture line whether for control or serotype is clear. The differing colour of silver allows a clear definition to be made between each test line or the test and control line, thus helping to avoid erroneous reading of results, and may assist with the level of simplistic user/product interface required for CLIA waive applications.

EM Grade Gold Conjugates

Life Science deals with reagent based products for researchers outside of the lateral flow industry. Predominantly these products are used for Immunocytochemistry on tissue sections under the TEM & LM. A researcher has a primary antibody for the analyte of interest and BBI supplies the secondary gold labelled antibody. BBI has a range of EM and LM grade products that combine different antibodies on the range of particles, predominantly from 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 & 40nm. These products are sold as 0.25ml & 1ml pack sizes, usually at OD3.

Gold labels act as markers for molecules that are otherwise invisible by eye or through other detection systems. A colloidal gold conjugate consists of a suspension of gold particles coated with a selected protein or macromolecule (such as an antibody). The gold particles may be manufactured to any chosen size from 2 to 250nm. This gold probe detection system, when incubated with a specific target, such as in a tissue section, will reveal the target through the visibility of the gold particles themselves.

NexusBeads™

BBI’s range of Nexus Beads™ is manufactured using a proprietary method that results in exact and highly monodisperse sizes and shapes, with the added advantage of a patent pending method that includes a covalent bonded polymer cage with carboxyl, methyl, biotin, or neutravidin terminal groups. This formulation has been optimized for in vitro use.
